THE OTHER
LUCY
by Katie Oliver
Chapter Five
Alan carefully manovered the
immense craft into the gully. There were only inches to spare on either
side of the wings. The sloping ground underneath did not make things any
easier.
“Steady, Alan,’ breathed Gordon,
as they settled into position. ‘I think she’ll do alright here.”
Alan didn’t bother to answer,
all his concentration going into holding Thunderbird two steady. Gordon
activated the ultrasound. Immediately he had signals. Sorting them out
he found he had four strong ones and two very week.
“Scott, I’m patching the signals
over to you, I’ve got six so far, how many people missing?”
“seven we think. Got those,
the diggers are underway.” Scott had set up mobile control on a flattish
area of ground at the base of the gully. He directed the diggers to the
co-ordinates given by Gordon. “Gordon, get the last one as soon as possible.
If its Lucy, she’ll not be wearing a transceiver, so you may have to adjust
the frequency.”
“FAB,” replied Gordon. He adjusted
the controls, and swept the gully again. The seventh signal appeared, close
to the right wall of the gully, at the edge of the avalanche.
“Scott, I’ve got it. Grid 162
851. Right by the gully wall. Its very weak.”
Virgil left the desk at mobile
control and started up the gully. The position was right, it had to be
Lucy. He gasped as he toiled upwards, despite his fitness. The steep slope
and the altitude conspired to slow him down. Passing a team of diggers
he borrowed a snowmobile, and was soon at the point Gordon had located.
As he began to dig Scott joined him on a hover bike. The snow was not deep
here, and they quickly located a boot. From there digging Lucy out took
only minutes. It would not have mattered if it had taken hours. Lucy had
hit her head on a rock as she had fallen.
She was dead.
