Chapter 2: Sickness
Scott woke
from his slumbers with a start and took a few seconds to orientate himself.
He allowed his eyes to adjust to the darkness before reaching for the light
switch. It was fortunate he was a fairly light sleeper. As rescue leader
he was required on most missions and he was used to being on standby twenty
four hours a day. He was sure he had heard something coming from Alan's
bedroom. It was quiet now, then he heard it again, a moaning and a retching.
Scott hurried out of his bed and quickly entered the room next to his,
which was occupied by his youngest brother. What Scott saw gave him every
cause for concern. Alan was barely conscious and appeared to be holding
his stomach in great pain. Scott moved quickly forward and felt his brother's
head. Alan sweating profusely and the perspiration was oozing from him
like water being squeezed from a wet sponge. His complexion was also very
pale and his breathing seemed to be erratic.
"Hold
on Alan" Scott said as he pushed the emergency button that all the rooms
were equipped with. This duly sent an alarm signal to all the other rooms
waking the entire household.
Within
seconds Jeff, Brains Grandma and Tin-Tin arrived adjusting dressing gowns
and immediately showing concern when they saw Alan's condition. Brains
stepped forward and examined the youngest Tracy.
"Ugh,
my stomach feels like it's on fire" Alan complained.
"Well
Brains? Asked Jeff anxiously.
Before
the scientific genius could answer Virgil arrived having come from Gordon's
room, looking equally concerned.
"I think
you oughta take a look at Gordon as well, he's got the same symptoms"
There
was only one inevitable conclusion.
"Food
poisoning, it must have been that darned fish" Jeff stated.
Kyrano
had by now arrived and was looking on even more anxiously than the rest.
Jeff could immediately tell what was going through his mind.
"Hey
Kyrano, I don't want you thinking you are responsible for this."
"But
it is I who prepared the fish Mr Tracy" Kyrano said sadly.
"It
is er u..unlikely th that the er preparation or cooking was t to er bl
blame." Brains told the gentle Asian. "The f fish itself was er c contaminated"
"Father
it wasn't your fault at all" Added Tin-Tin reassuringly.
Grandma
had left momentarily and returned with two cold wet towels, one of which
she handed to Virgil
"Go
and place this on Gordon's head" She ordered.
Virgil
took the towel and did so, whilst she did the same for Alan. Tin-Tin meanwhile
was now holding an electronic respomometer above Alan's mouth to measure
his breathing and internal body temperature.
"Well
I guess we better put out a call for the doc to come over"
"I I
don’t th think that will be er n necessary Mrs Tracy. W we can er handle
this h here. I think it is a er r relatively m minor case, b but it will
k keep the boys bedridden for a few days,"
"Are
you sure Brains? It looks serious to me" growled Jeff.
"Alan's
readings are stable" announced Tin-Tin with some relief.
"As
I er th thought. Tin-Tin."
"Yes
Brains"
"You
better g go and er mix up s some of that medicine for this kind of sickness"
"At
once Brains" She answered as she placed the device she was holding on Alan's
bedside table.
Jeff
meanwhile was looking anxious.
"Let's
just hope we don't need Gordon or Alan in the near future. Still I suppose
we should be grateful that Scott and Virgil are both fit."
