Chapter 2: Nothing to Worry About

The eyes of the portrait of John in the lounge of the Tracy Villa on Tracy Island flashed along with a beeping that was always heard when John or one of his brothers reported to base. Jeff Tracy pushed a button on his desk, and the portrait turned into a telecom and a hidden microphone rose from Jeff’s desk.
“Hi John. What news do you have for us?” said Jeff.
“I have something really strange Father, a code that can’t be broken”, just as John said this Scott came into the lounge.
“Is there any indication that the message may contain any distress signal John?” asked Jeff
“No Father. The signal doesn’t seem to repeat like a call for help might do and the sender doesn’t seem to be particularly trying to get a message to us. But I am concerned that our decipher machine can’t break the code. I get the impression that something sinister is going on here Father” John said trying to convince his Father that he wasn’t just wasting time looking for something to do.
“John, I don’t think this is anything to worry about at the moment. Ignore it and continue with scanning for distress signals, this isn’t a job for International Rescue.” Jeff replied.
“Now hold on a minute” said Scott, butting in “where is this message coming from John?”
“My scans show that one end of the communication is based in London in England, Scott” answered John “I will have to keep scanning to find the other end of the transmissions.”
“Look, John, I said to drop this” snapped Jeff.
John and Scott were surprised that Jeff didn’t seem concerned by this, it was Scott who spoke first, “Father this could be really serious …”
“No Scott, it isn’t, now lets just forget it and get on with our work!”
“F.A.B. Father” said John quickly, finishing the conversation. He pushed the ‘Cancel’ button on his control panel and the lights stopped flashing, the control room was quiet again.
